Project overview
The Collie River Pedestrian Suspension Bridge is a landmark recreational structure delivered as part of the Collie Adventure Trails initiative, creating a unique crossing that connects visitors to the region's growing network of walking, cycling and adventure trails.
Design & Analysis partnered with Fortec Australia to develop the detailed design of the bridge, transforming an innovative concept into a practical, buildable solution that balanced structural performance, visitor experience and environmental sensitivity. Our tension ribbon bridge concept formed the basis of Fortec's successful tender and was subsequently delivered as part of the project.
Set within a scenic section of the Collie River valley, the bridge was designed to complement its natural surroundings while minimising impacts on the river corridor and surrounding bushland. The low-profile tension ribbon structure eliminates the need for large support towers, creating the appearance of a lightweight ribbon suspended above the landscape. This approach reduced the construction footprint, preserved key views and allowed the environment to remain the focal point.
Durability and longevity were central to the design. Weathering steel, stainless steel handrails and stainless steel mesh balustrades were selected to provide a robust, low-maintenance solution suited to the local environment. The weathering steel develops a natural protective patina over time, helping the bridge blend seamlessly into its bushland setting.
Architectural detailing was also influenced by local Indigenous cultural themes, creating a subtle connection to the region's heritage while enhancing the overall visitor experience.
Design & Analysis provided concept development, detailed structural and civil design, engineering certification and construction support. Today, the bridge stands as a signature feature of Collie's recreation and tourism network, showcasing how thoughtful engineering can successfully integrate environmental, cultural and community outcomes.
