Project overview
Design & Analysis (D&A) worked with CMW to deliver an alternative structural design for Retaining Wall RW23A on the Smart Freeway Mitchell Southbound Upgrade between Hester Avenue and Warwick Road. The project required the development of a practical and cost-effective design solution that met the requirements of Main Roads Western Australia (MRWA) while supporting efficient construction.
The alternative design featured a king post wall system incorporating steel posts and precast concrete panels. The solution was developed to simplify installation, improve constructability, and provide a cost-effective outcome while maintaining durability, safety, and long-term performance.
The design was independently verified and developed in accordance with MRWA standards, ensuring compliance with project requirements. Through a combination of innovative thinking and practical engineering, D&A delivered a solution that supports the Smart Freeway upgrade's objective of improving traffic flow and safety for road users.
