Project overview

Design and Analysis partnered with the construction team to develop a safe and practical lifting solution for large reinforcement cages used in bridge pier construction on the Armadale Rd Upgrade.

Drawing on our extensive temporary works and construction engineering experience, we designed an innovative lifting arrangement for reinforcement cages weighing up to 25 tonnes. The solution utilised purpose-designed welded reinforcement trusses to provide stability during tilting and lifting operations, eliminating the need for heavier structural steel bracing traditionally used for this type of lift.

Working closely with the contractor and specialist rigging team, we assessed lifting points, sling configurations and spreader beam arrangements to ensure the cages could be safely handled without overstressing or permanently deforming the reinforcement. The collaborative approach enabled an efficient construction solution that was both practical to implement and compliant with relevant safety requirements.

The lifting operations were completed successfully, with all reinforcement cages installed without damage or incident, demonstrating the value of integrating structural engineering expertise with construction methodology from the earliest stages of project delivery.
